Commentary

Two interesting representations on the right and reverse. The legend of the law is taken from Sallust, War of Catiline, civil. Ostend is a port in West Flanders on the North Sea. The fortifications of Ostend built by Philip the Good in 1445 were reinforced in 1583 by the Prince of Orange. This explains that the siege of Ostend lasted three years from 1601 to 1604. The Spanish were commanded by Spinola
