Commentary

Particularly rare denarius with a crossed E or M on the reverse found on some coins from Melle. Here, it could be a crossed E for Episcopus. This coin seems to come from the same obverse die as some denarii bearing the monogram AE on the reverse: abbreviation for Ansoaldus Episcopus designating the bishop of Poitiers Ansoald (676-696)?

Historical background

POITIERS - PECTAVIS - CIVITAS PECTAVORUM

(late 7th - early 8th century)

Many denarii from Poitiers have a radiated head, as in Orleans. These denarii were struck at the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century, since they are found in the treasury of Plassac (Gironde) hidden around 710-730. The Merovingian coinage of the Poitevine region is quite diversified, with triens and a wide variety of denarii. The proximity of the silver mines of Melle is certainly no coincidence.
