Denier frappé sur un flan irrégulier et recouvert d’une patine grise de médaillier. Léger décentrage au revers avec une partie des légendes hors flan

Commentary

Ce denier semble avoir été frappé avec les mêmes coins que les n° 161, 161a et 161b du trésor de Bais. Hors du trésor de Bais, le seul autre denier répertorié pour ce type est passé en vente en octobre 1963 chez Vinchon et dans VSO Monnaies 32, n° 986 (mêmes coins que ce denier).

(late 7th - early 8th century)

Many denarii from Poitiers have a radiated head, as in Orleans. These denarii were struck at the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century, since they are found in the treasury of Plassac (Gironde) hidden around 710-730. The Merovingian coinage of the Poitevine region is quite diversified, with triens and a wide variety of denarii. The proximity of the silver mines of Melle is certainly no coincidence.
