Obverse description : Buste casqué, diadémé avec pendilia et cuirassé de Maurice Tibère de face tenant un globe crucigère de la main droite et un bouclier de la gauche (N’a) ; diadème perlé.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Mauricius Tiberius Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Maurice Tibère perpétuel auguste).

Reverse description : Grande M surmontée d'une étoile ; le tout dans une couronne.

Commentary


Poids léger. Diadème avec pendilia bouletés surmonté d’un casque à plumet. Cavalier galopant à droite sur le bouclier. Portrait stylisé. Surfrappé sur un follis plus ancien.

MAURICIUS TIBERIUS

(08/13/582-11/22/602)

Maurice succeeded his father-in-law Tiberius II. After great victories over the Sassanids, he suffered many setbacks in the Balkans and could not prevent the installation of the Slavs and Avars. A military plot overthrew him in 602. He was assassinated while trying to take refuge with Chosroes II.
