Obverse


Obverse legend : EPILVS.
Obverse description : Cheval ou taureau au repos à droite, la tête levée ; un annelet entre les jambes et la légende au-dessus.

Reverse


Reverse legend : VORONANTOS.
Reverse description : Cheval bondissant à droite, une esse sortant de la bouche ; légende au-dessus.

Commentary


Ce très rare bronze correspond au DT. 415 (considéré comme unique depuis sa publication en 1973 et provenant du dépôt de fouille de Eu, Seine-Maritime).
La légende du revers, VORON n’est pas sans rappeler le DT. S 657A.
L’association de ces deux animaux au droit et au revers est étrangement très proche de celle des bronzes à légende EPV, de la série 423 (DT. 2439) attribuée aux Aulerques Eburovices.
This very rare bronze corresponds to DT. 415 (considered unique since its publication in 1973 and coming from the excavation deposit of Eu, Seine-Maritime). The legend on the reverse, VORON, is reminiscent of DT. S 657A. The association of these two animals on the obverse and reverse is strangely very close to that of the bronzes with the EPV legend, from series 423 (DT. 2439) attributed to the Aulerci Eburovices

The Véliocasses, people of Belgian Gaul, lived in the Norman Vexin located in the current department of Seine-Maritime. Their neighbors were the Lexovians and the Aulerci Éburovices, with the Seine as their border, and on the other side the Parisii, the Calètes and the Bellovaques. Their main oppidum was Rouen (Rotomagus)..
