Commentary

The National Union of Combatants (UNC) was, from the outset, intended to welcome veterans as well as war widows and orphans. As chaplain to the soldiers, Father Brottier gave the UNC its raison d'être by asking the Poilus, once peace had returned, to remain “United as at the front.” It was he who instilled in the UNC the spiritual, moral, civic, and social foundations that still constitute the UNC's values today, and because they are still true, a provisional committee was formed, a national structure was created to carry out this project. General Léon Durand, hero of the Grand Couronné of Nancy, recently retired, agreed to assume the presidency. Local sections and departmental groups were quickly formed throughout France and overseas. The combatants of 1939-1945, those of Indochina, North Africa, external theatres of operations (TOE), the Opex, former military servicemen, all soldiers of France, find themselves within the UNC in the same spirit of mutual aid and camaraderie.
