Commentary
Cette médaille a été décernée au sénateur, Henri Lafleur (1902-1974) dont le père originaire de Lorraine est venu en Nouvelle-Calédonie comme commis de l'administration pénitentiaire. Après ses études, il se lance dans la prospection d'abord forestière puis minière, comme son frère aîné Maurice, et fait fortune, devenant propriétaire de concessions de nickel et chrome. Il est bientôt l'un des principaux exportateurs calédoniens de ces deux minéraux.
Il sera élu sénateur à partir de 1959, puis en 1965 et enfin en 1974, après avoir été conseiller général pour la première circonscription de la Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1947 à 1953 et membre de la commission de la France d’Outre-Mer au Conseil de la République.
This medal was awarded to Senator Henri Lafleur (1902-1974), whose father, originally from Lorraine, came to New Caledonia as a prison administration clerk. After his studies, he began prospecting, first in forestry and then in mining, like his older brother Maurice, and made his fortune, becoming the owner of nickel and chrome concessions. He soon became one of the main New Caledonian exporters of these two minerals. He was elected Senator in 1959, then in 1965 and finally in 1974, after having been a general councillor for the first constituency of New Caledonia from 1947 to 1953 and a member of the Overseas France Commission at the Council of the Republic.
