Commentary

Reims Cathedral was called the \\\"martyr cathedral\\\" because, in 1914, shortly after the start of hostilities, it began to be bombarded by the Germans. The first shells fell on the city of Reims and the cathedral on September 4, 1914, just before the German troops entered the city. As a matter of urgency, Abbots Jules Thinot and Maurice Landrieux erected a white flag to stop the bombardments.
