Cette monnaie commémore le centenaire de la Statue de la Liberté inaugurée le 28 octobre 1886 en présence du président des États-Unis, Grover Cleveland. Elle fut longtemps le symbole de la Liberté et d’une nouvelle vie pour de nombreux immigrants arrivant à New York après la longue traversée de l’Océan Atlantique en bateau. De 1892 à 1954, les nouveaux immigrants passaient préalablement par l’île Ellis (Ellis Island) .
