Commentary
At the end of 1943, following the failure of the Battle of the Kursk Salient, German troops retreated to a defensive line, the Panther-Wotan Line. In January 1944, as part of the Dnieper-Carpathian Offensive, Russian troops succeeded in crossing the Dnieper River and encircling more than 60,000 German soldiers. A counteroffensive by Manstein failed. Finally, in mid-February, a large number of German soldiers managed to flee, abandoning their wounded and equipment, despite Hitler's orders prohibiting any retreat. Stalin was deprived of his Stalingrad on the Dnieper.
