Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête stylisée à gauche, avec l'œil en creux. Le crâne semble être orné d’un casque ou d’une chevelure traitée en quatre globules qui longent le bourrelet circulaire délimitant la monnaie.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Taureau cornupète chargeant à gauche.

Commentary


Cette classe se caractérise par les quatre globules derrière la tête. L'exemplaire S266 du BMCC semble avoir le premier globule bien visible.

TURONES (Area of Touraine)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The people of the Turons, settled on the Loire, left their name to Tours and Touraine. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. They seem to have grown in importance after the disappearance of the Arverne empire in 121 BC. Like the Pictons, the Turons provided eight thousand men for the relief army which was to release Alesia. Their main oppidum seems to have been placed near the site of Amboise. Caesar (BG. II, 35; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 46).
