Sainte-Sophie est un basilique chrétienne bâtie au IVe siècle à Constantinople. Au VIe siècle, l’empereur byzantin Justinien ordonne sa reconstruction et lui donne sa physionomie actuelle. Après la prise de la ville (rebaptisée Istanbul) en 1453, elle est convertie en mosquée.
