Exemplaire sur un flan très large, légèrement bombé, bien centré des deux côtés. Très beau portrait de haut relief. Revers magnifique, finement détaillé, de haut relief. Recouvert d’une fine patine avec des reflets mordorés. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Tête d'Héraklès à droite, coiffée de la léonté nouée sous le cou.

Reverse description : Zeus aétophore assis à gauche sur un trône sans dossier, les jambes croisées, nu jusqu'à la ceinture, tenant un aigle posé sur sa main droite et un long sceptre bouleté de la gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un monogramme et un griffon couché à gauche.
Reverse legend : ALEXANDROU/ (MUE).
Commentary
Tétradrachme au nom et au type d’Alexandre III le Grand (336-323 avant J.-C.) posthume. Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire du trésor de Tell Kotchek (IGCH. 1773) (Seyrig, trésors, p. 66, n° 15.2, pl 23).
Historical background
TROAS - ASSOS
(5th - 3rd century BC)
The city of Assos was located on the Gulf of Adramytion west of Antandros, opposite the island of Lesbos. Founded in the 7th century by lesbian settlers, it successively came under Lydian and then Persian domination. After the Persian Wars, it joined the Delos League and became a tributary of Athens. The city reached its peak in the 4th century BC under the direction of Eubulus, then of the philosopher Hermias, who brought Aristotle there in 347 BC. The city was incorporated into the kingdom of Pergamum in 241 BC before becoming part of the province of Asia after 133 BC.
