In 1497, explorer John Cabot seized Newfoundland for the English Crown. The colony received dominion status in 1907, along with New Zealand. It was not until 1949, following a referendum, that Newfoundland and Labrador joined the Canadian Confederation.

Historical background

NEWFOUNDLAND

Following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the French definitively ceded Newfoundland to the British. In 1824, the island became a Crown colony. In 1907, Newfoundland achieved Dominion status, but this status was suspended in 1934 due to the territory's excessive debt. In 1948, a referendum was held to ask the population about the territory's future. 52% of Newfoundlanders voted to join Canada. Newfoundland became Canada's tenth province in 1949..
