Commentary

Guillaume Farel est né en 1489 à Gap, aux Fareaux (voir carte IGN). Le nom du lieu est à l'origine de son nom de famille. En 1523, il devient l'envoyé de Berne en Suisse romande pour inciter les baillages à rejoindre la Réforme. Il commence à Aigle, alors bailliage bernois, en amont du lac Léman.

En 1532, il convainc les Vaudois d'adhérer à la Réforme. Il les invite à financer la première Bible imprimée en français : c'est la traduction d'Olivétan qui sort de l'imprimerie de Pierre de Vingle à Neuchâtel.

En 1535, il demande à Jean Calvin de prendre la tête de l'Église de Genève.

En 1538, il devient pasteur ; il est considéré comme le réformateur de Neuchâtel.

Guillaume Farel was born in 1489 in Gap, in Les Fareaux (see IGN map). The place name is the origin of his surname. In 1523, he became Bern's envoy to French-speaking Switzerland to encourage the bailiwicks to join the Reformation. He began in Aigle, then a Bernese bailiwick, upstream from Lake Geneva. In 1532, he convinced the Waldensians to join the Reformation. He invited them to finance the first Bible printed in French: it was Olivétan's translation that came out of Pierre de Vingle's printing house in Neuchâtel. In 1535, he asked John Calvin to take the helm of the Church of Geneva. In 1538, he became a pastor; he is considered the reformer of Neuchâtel. Source: Lexilogos
