SWITZERLAND - CANTON OF FRIBOURG

Friborg was founded in 1178 by the House of Zäringhen then, from 1277, passed into the Habsburg family. In 1452, Louis de Savoie incorporated Friborg into his duchy. In 1477, the people of Friborg became independent before becoming members of the Helvetic Confederation in 1481. Friborg concluded a treaty of alliance with France called "Perpetual Peace". In the 16th century the canton of Friborg was the center of the Swiss Catholic reform.
