Suite à un putsch des militaires, Charles III succède en 1809 à son neveu Gustave IV Adolphe. Suite à la guerre de 1814 avec le Danemark, il devient roi de Norvège. Il est le dernier roi règnant de la maison d'Holstein-Gottorp. Mort sans héritier en 1818, le maréchal d’Empire Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte lui succède sous le nom de Charles XIV Jean de Suède..
Following a military putsch, Charles III succeeded his nephew Gustav IV Adolf in 1809. Following the war with Denmark in 1814, he became King of Norway. He was the last reigning king of the House of Holstein-Gottorp. He died without an heir in 1818 and was succeeded by Marshal of the Empire Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, who took the name Charles XIV John of Sweden.
