Historical background

SWEDEN - KINGDOM OF SWEDEN - GUSTAF III

(12/02/1771-29/03/1792)

Gustave III (24/01/1746-29/03/1792) is the son of Adolphe-Frédéric (1710-1771) who reigned over Sweden from 1753 to 1771 and Louise Ulrica of Prussia (1710-1782). He succeeded his father in 1771 and married Sophie Madeleine of Denmark (1746-1813) in 1766 with whom he had two sons, Charles Gustave who died young and Gustave-Adolphe IV (1778-1837) who succeeded his father in 1792 before dying. abdicated in 1809. Gustave III was the Swedish model of the enlightened despot, a great admirer of France. He fought against Denmark and Russia. Freemason, he developed the Order in Sweden, but clashed with the conservative party of "caps" and was assassinated by one of its officers on the eve of declaring war on revolutionary France. Charles XIII (1748-1818), brother of Gustave III, had already been regent between 1792 and 1796 and succeeded his nephew in 1809. Died childless, it was Charles XIV Jean Bernadotte (1818-1844) who ascended the throne.
