Commentary

Italian Somalia was an Italian colony from 1889 to 1941. During World War II, the British occupied the region from 1941, leaving it at the end of 1949. The United Nations then temporarily entrusted the region's administration to Italy until 1960, when it gained independence. This last period was called the Amnistrazione Fiduciara Italiana della Somalia (AFIS).

Historical background

SOMALILAND - TRUST TERRITORY OF SOMALILAND

(1950-1960)

From 1884, Italy colonized Somalia. In 1941, the Allies attacked Italian East Africa, which ceased to exist in November 1941. Between 1941 and 1950, the former Italian Somaliland was under British military administration. In 1949, the UN General Assembly decided to place Somalia under UN trusteeship on April 1, 1950. This trusteeship, assigned to Italy, was poorly received in the region, as Italy was the former colonial power and the Italian administration was a successor to the former fascist colonial administration. From 1953, the mandate was clarified with the objective of progressing towards independence, scheduled for 1960. Indeed, on July 1, 1960, the independence of the Republic of Somalia was proclaimed..
