Obverse

Obverse description : Tête de Koré Perséphone à droite, couronnée d’épis, les cheveux longs tombant sur la nuque ; symbole derrière la tête, une torche ; grènetis circulaire.
Obverse legend : [SURAKOSIWN].
Obverse translation : (de Syracuse).

Reverse

Reverse description : Bige galopant à droite conduit par un aurige, tenant le kentron (badine) de la main droite et les rênes de la main gauche surmonté d’un astre à huit rais.
Reverse legend : (GU).

Commentary

Ce type semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la première fois que nous présentons un exemplaire de ce type.

Hiketas

Hiketas, strategist, succeeded Agathokles and became tyrant of Syracuse. He defeated Phintias, tyrant of Agrigento, at Hyblaion, but was in turn defeated by the Carthaginians at Terias and expelled from Thonion in 279 BC before being driven out of Syracuse and replaced by Pyrrhus (Diodorus of Sicily , 21, 16, 6; 18.1; 22, 2, 1; 7, 2-3); [KP. 1145, lines 17-49].
