Selinunte was, according to Montenegro, founded in 628 BC by settlers from Megara Hyblæa (Sicily), itself a colony of Megara (Megaride, Central Greece). The city was located on the southern coast of Sicily, at the mouth of the Selinos river, in the area of Carthaginian influence.
