Historical background

SICILY - ALASEA

(4th - 3rd century BC)

The city of Alaisa was founded in 403 BC on the northern coast of Sicily. The city is distinguished from Alais near Etna and bears the name of Archonidée. It was populated by mercenaries from Herbita when the city opposed Dionysius the Elder. The city then fell under Carthaginian influence. Nevertheless Alaisa quickly rallied to Rome during the First Punic War and remained loyal during the Second Punic War. So she remained free. However, she was also a victim of the plunder of Verres during her proconsulate in Sicily..
