Commentary

Historical background

Sextus

(67-35 BC) Sextus Pompeius Magnus

Pompey after Pharsalus, fled to Egypt where he was murdered. This mint is restored by his youngest son Sextus (67-35 BC), who continued the fight against Caesar after the death of his elder brother in Munda in 45 BC Reconciled with Antoine in 44 BC, he was a great military command and set up his headquarters in Marseille before becoming commander of the fleet of the Republic the following year. At the instigation of Octavius, declared a public enemy, he was proscribed. He left Marseille for the benefit of Sicily where he crushed the Octave fleet commanded by Quintus Salvidienus Rufus in 42 BC He took the title "son of Neptune" like his father and assumed the title of Pius. Reconciled with Octavian, he was finally defeated by Agrippa Nauloque September 3, 36 BC He managed to escape in Asia Minor, but was executed at the instigation of Marc Antoine.
