Historical background

SEVERINA

(+ after 275)

Wife of Aurelian - Augusta

Séverine, who receives the title of augusta in 274, survives her husband Aurélien, assassinated by a palace conspiracy. A three-month interregnum ensued, during which Séverine may continue to settle current affairs with the help of the Senate. The coinage of Séverine is very important compared to that of her husband for such a short period, between the end of 274, date of the reform, and the death of Aurélien.
