Cette monnaie montre la différence entre notre conception moderne d'une belle monnaie et la conception antique d'une monnaie de valeur ; ce quart de statère représentait 1,82 grammes d'or et valait plus qu'un beau petit quart avec une belle chevelure et un élégant cheval, mais de quelques centigrammes de métal précieux de moins...
Pour ces monnaies globulaires, il existe deux types bien distincts ; avec le segment au revers ou avec une dépression très légèrement pointillée, mais sans le segment !
Cet exemplaire est encore un peu différent, avec deux segments au revers.
This coin shows the difference between our modern concept of a beautiful coin and the ancient concept of a valuable coin; this quarter stater represented 1.82 grams of gold and was worth more than a beautiful small quarter with a beautiful head of hair and an elegant horse, but a few centigrams less of precious metal... For these globular coins, there are two very distinct types; with the segment on the reverse or with a very slightly dotted depression, but without the segment! This example is a little different again, with two segments on the reverse

Historical background
SENONES (Area of Sens)
(2nd - 1st century BC)
The Sénons, whose name means the sages or the elders, controlled a vast territory which extended between the south of Champagne and the north of Burgundy. Their main oppidum was Agedincum (Sens) which still retains the name of the ancient civitas today. They had several other oppida like Auxerre, Tonnerre or Avallon. Divona seems to have been the principal sanctuary of the Senones. Caesar had wintered six of his legions in 53 BC at Agedincum. Labienus, Caesar's lieutenant and legate, came to settle in the region of Sens between Gergovie and Alesia in order to control the roads and protect Caesar's armies from an attack from the Belgians or the Germans.
