Commentary

La plus grande partie des jetons ou des méreaux à compte italiens concerne des émissions réalisées par les nombreuses compagnies marchandes pour la durée de leur association (entre 1 et 3 ans), chaque famille laissant sa marque ou son monogramme. Le nombre de méreaux à compte est considérable. Le décor de bordure se caractérise presque toujours par la présence de besants, censés représenter les anciennes pièces de compte (des besants byzantins démonétisés ayant préfiguré en Orient Latin, dans les comptoirs italiens, les premiers jetons, par commodité ou nécessité). La plupart des monogrammes restent encore à identifier par la confrontation des marques avec les registres d’archives (pièces de comptage et de péage), ce à quoi s’appliquent avec peine Franca-Maria Vanni et de trop rares spécialistes.
