Commentary

Obverse legend poorly described in Feuardent: PACIFERO, it is in fact PACIFICO. example struck with the obverse of Feuardent 6197 but with an unreported reverse legend. The reverse die has also been retouched with a V over an O which transformed ORBIS into VRBIS. Is this a later strike? Exceptional and specific bust

Historical background

ROUEN (CITY OF...)

Former city of the Veliocasses, Rotomagus developed in Roman times and became the metropolis of Lyonnaise II at the end of the 4th century. Taken many times by the Normans, it became one of their main stations. In 911 it became the residence of the Dukes of Normandy. Commune in 1144, it belonged to France from 1204 to 1419, when it passed to the English until 1449. The Exchequer of Normandy was transformed into a sovereign court in 1499 then into Parliament in 1515. The city was under the Ancien Régime, a flourishing center of textile industries ("rouenneries" and Indians) and trade with Africa.
