Lucius Cornelius Cinna and Caius Marius are consuls in 86 BC Marius is consul for the seventh time when he dies in January, replaced by Lucius Valerius Flaccus. Cinna will also be consul without interruption from 87 to 84 before being assassinated. Sylla takes Athens and, after the battles of Chaeronea and Orchomene, signs the peace of Dardanus with Mithridates VI of Pontus (120-63 BC). Nicomedes IV of Bithynia (94-74 BC) and Ariobarzanes I of Cappadocia (95-63 BC) are restored. Catullus and Sallust were both born in 86 BC.
