Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) debout de face, tournée à gauche sur une proue de navire, les ailes déployées, tenant un sceptre transversal de la main droite et appuyée sur un bouclier de la main gauche.

Commentary


Poids léger. Rarissime imitation associant l’avers d’un nummus au type de Rome pour le droit et au revers des nummi au type de Constantinople.
Lightweight. Extremely rare imitation combining the obverse of a nummus with the Roman type on the obverse and the reverse of the nummi with the Constantinople type on the reverse.

(330-348)

Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC according to Varro (Ab Urbe Condita). The city, whose population fluctuated between 400,000 and one million during the High Empire, lost its importance from the second half of the 3rd century. The choice by Constantine of a new capital, from 326, dealt him a fatal blow from which the Urbs would not recover before the Renaissance. The city will still survive for nearly one hundred and fifty years, despite two sacks: those of 410 and 455. Rome is no longer in Rome.
