Historical background

SOUTHERN RHODESIA

(1923-1965 then 1979-1980)

Between 1890 and 1923, the territory was administered by the British South Africa Company before becoming a colony in 1923. In 1964, following Northern Rhodesia's independence, the territory unilaterally renamed itself Rhodesia, which declared itself independent. In June 1979, the country briefly renamed itself Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. Faced with political instability, Rhodesia reverted to being a British colony between December 12, 1979, and April 18, 1980. Having gained independence on that date, the country is now known as Zimbabwe..
