Médaille sous capsule.
Willy Brandt fut l'une des figures les plus marquantes de l'histoire contemporaine allemande et du SPD (Parti social-démocrate d'Allemagne). Résistant au nazisme, exilé pendant la guerre, il devint maire de Berlin-Ouest pendant la guerre froide, où il gagna en notoriété lors de la crise du mur de Berlin.
Chancelier de la RFA de 1969 à 1974, il est surtout connu pour sa politique de détente envers l'Est, appelée Ostpolitik. Brandt chercha à normaliser les relations avec les pays du bloc de l'Est, notamment la RDA, la Pologne et l’URSS, dans une volonté de réconciliation et de paix. Son geste symbolique à Varsovie en 1970, s'agenouillant devant le monument du ghetto, reste un moment fort de la mémoire allemande.
Il reçut le prix Nobel de la paix en 1971. Sous son mandat, des réformes sociales importantes furent aussi mises en place. Il démissionna en 1974 après une affaire d'espionnage (affaire Guillaume), mais resta une figure influente du SPD et de la politique européenne jusqu’à sa mort.
