Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Postume à gauche, levant la main droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (J*1).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Postumus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Postume pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : P M TR P CO-S II P P.
Reverse description : Virtus (la Virilité) ou Postume debout à gauche, tenant un globe de la main droite et une longue haste pointée vers le haut de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul iterum Pater Patriæ”, (Grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne Consul pour la deuxième fois père de la patrie).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges à peine visibles sous le paludamentum. Tous les exemplaires de buste (J*1), n° Bastien 116 à 123, pl. XXV-XXVI soit vingt-deux exemplaires sont tous issus du même coin de droit ce qui prouve la rareté de ce buste en posture d’Adlocutio (salut). De la plus grande rareté.

Postume seizes the purple by eliminating Salonin, son of Gallien, of whom he had custody. He reigns over Gaul, Brittany and Spain. Did Postume toy with the idea of conquering the Roman Empire? Gallien, twice, will try to reconquer the "pars occidentalis" of the Empire, without success. Postume will remain in power for nine years, before perishing assassinated for having refused the sack of Mainz, a city which supported Lélien.
