Commentary

The only other example we have found is No. 219 of the Bais treasure, attributed by Mr. Prou to Poitou, based on the cross which seemed to him to be an imitation of the cross of the Brioux triens (cf. B. 970) and on the presence of interlacing which appears to be a deformation of the two opposite A's of Nos. 178-179 of the same treasure.

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
