Commentary

All attributions have been proposed for this coinage... Avignon (because of the AVE monogram on the reverse), Metz, Melle, and the authors of Moneta even classify these deniers as Marseille! If the attribution to this workshop is still subject to discussion, Melle is the most likely, both by type and distribution, but also in relation to the metallic analyses which tend to prove that the metal used came from the mines of Melle. This example has fairly complete monograms!

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
