Commentary

This denier is very interesting, with a particularly well-placed M on the obverse, but a reverse as if struck with an almost smooth die, showing only a few large globules on the periphery. Of uncertain attribution, this denier nevertheless seems to be able to be linked to the series with the M classified in Poitou and more precisely in Melle

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
