Commentary

On the reverse, the legend VIPT seems to be off-flank. But this type of bronze is supposed to be anepigraphic on the obverse, whereas on this example we can see a sort of very geometric epigraphy in front of the face. The New Atlas illustrates two coins precisely; the DT. 3691 with this same legend or pseudo-legend on the obverse and the DT. 3692 with only VIPT on the reverse.

Historical background

PICTONES / CENTER WEST, Unspecified

(1st century BC)

Several types traditionally given to the Pictons see their attribution questioned for a more general geographical area such as Center-West or Great-West of Gaul. Some also propose an attribution to a military workshop, perhaps linked to the Aedui... We must not imagine or dream of the Gallic, or even Celtic, economic space as closed. coins prove us wrong every day.
