Rare drachme bien identifiable, avec un avers complet mais de frappe molle. Revers un peu plus net avec une patine de collection ancienne, mais un peu hétérogène

Commentary

Selon la RN 1996, ce type au cavalier et au bouclier appartient à la série PIII, avec une tête aquitanique sans collier au droit et motif sous le cheval. Mais cet exemplaire serait plutôt de la série PIII B, qui correspondrait au n° 5 pl. I, alors que la série PIII B serait illustré plI, n° 19 (sic). Le fleuron est semblable au motif 10, page 13 de cette même RN.

Ce type de drachme est très rare ; le Numéraire celtique recense pourtant pas moins de 40 drachmes (sans distinction de coiffure) dont 3 à Bourges, 12 à la BN et 7 à Nantes. Le Nouvel Atlas défend fort justement le travail de D. Nash sur ces séries ; cette drachme est une variante de la classe III “à la tête aquitanique et au fleuron”.

L'attribution proposée dans le Nouvel Atlas est aux Bituriges, de même que les drachmes dites "au cavalier ailé des Pictons". Si l'attribution aux Pictons n'est pas totalement satisfaisante pour ces drachmes "au cavalier et bouclier", tout attribuer aux Bituriges nous semble assez arbitraire….
According to the RN 1996, this type with the rider and shield belongs to series PIII, with an Aquitanian head without a collar on the right and a motif under the horse. But this example would rather be from series PIII B, which would correspond to no. 5 pl. I, while series PIII B would be illustrated plI, no. 19 (sic). The fleuron is similar to motif 10, page 13 of this same RN.
