Historical background

PICENUM - HATRIA (ATRI)

(3rd century BC)

The city of Hatria, located twenty kilometers from the sea between Vomano and La Piomba, seems to have been founded by the Etruscans or Dorian settlers from Syracuse, sent by the tyrant Dionysius in 385 BC Hatria fell into Roman orbit and was refounded by the Romans as a Latin colony in 282 BC. It remained loyal to Rome during the Second Punic War, during Hannibal's Carthaginian invasion. At the end of the civil war between Octave and Marc Antoine, the latter installed veterans in the city.
