Commentary

Cet exemplaire de poids léger, avec TVRONIS au lieu de HTVRONES appartient très certainement aux imitations frappées juste après le décès d’Eudes.
This lightweight example, with TVRONIS instead of HTVRONES, most certainly belongs to the imitations struck just after Eudes' death.

Historical background

ODO

(02/29/888-01/01/898)

Eudes (860-898) is the first Robertian king, son of Robert the Strong (+866), marquis of Neustria. Eudes, Count of Paris from 882, heroically defended the city against the Normans during the siege around 885-887. Elected and crowned in 888, he was crowned at Compiègne. From this coronation, a fight that will last ten years opposes him to Charles III the Simple, the posthumous son of Louis II the Stammerer. Charles was crowned in 893. Eudes chose Charles as his successor and died in 898. The struggle would last another century between Carolingians and Robertians before Hugues Capet, Duke of the Franks, became the first Capetian king..
