Commentary


C’est l’une des deux représentations de navires pendant le règne de Néron sur les monnaies d’Alexandrie. Au total, il y a treize représentations de bateaux entre Néron et Commode sur le monnayage alexandrin. Ce type n’a été frappé qu’en l’an 13 (66/67). L’exemplaire de MONNAIES XXVIII s’est vendu 414 € avec une offre maximum à 436 €.
It is one of two depictions of ships during Nero's reign on the coins of Alexandria. In total, there are thirteen representations of boats between Nero and Commodus on Alexandrian coinage. This type was not struck until year 13 (66/67). The copy of MONNAIES XXVIII sold for €414 with a maximum bid of €436

NERO

(13/10/54-9/06/68)

The monetary reform of 64 made it possible to restore the finances of the state while making the inhabitants of the Empire bear the cost of these. This year 64 is marked by the great fire of Rome and its consequences, including the persecution against the Christians of the city. The following year, it is the discovery of the conspiracy of Pison, the death of Seneca and Lucain. In 66, Tiridates was enthroned King of Armenia in Rome. Nero then goes to Greece where he performs on stage and proclaims "The freedom of Greece". The excesses of the emperor cause at the beginning of the year 68 a wave of discontent which culminates with the revolt of Vindex in Gaule, Galba and Otho in Spain. Nero is declared a public enemy by the Senate. He committed suicide on June 9 so as not to fall alive into the hands of his enemies..
