Commentary

Gérard Mellier was the seventy-third mayor of Nantes from 1720 to 1730. He was the son of Gérard Mellier and Claudine Ballet and was born in Lyon on May 21, 1674. He was a royal advisor, treasurer of France, general of finance and grand-voyer in Brittany. He was also a knight of the royal military and hospital orders of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, commissioner and deputy of the Council for the affairs of the East India Company, colonel of the bourgeois militia, president of the health office, etc. He died in office in 1729 after having been extended as mayor several times and having received a sword on the hilt of which were engraved the arms of the city and his own “as a monument to the recognition that his care and services deserved.” We owe him many improvements: the fire pumps, the construction of the Île Feydeau, the Bourse bridge, the Academy of Music, etc. His coat of arms is azure with a silver fess accompanied by fourteen gold bezants, seven in chief placed three, four; seven in base placed four, three

Historical background

NANTES (ALDERMANS AND MAYORS OF...)

The Town Hall of Nantes was installed in 1565 after having been created by François II in 1560, with the right to elect its aldermen. The first strikes of tokens are attested by the texts from 1569. The first tokens do not bear the name of the mayor, they are tokens of aldermen. A second period began in 1631 with the appearance of the mayor's name on the tokens. The coat of arms appeared in 1637. There are silver and copper tokens for this period. In the 18th century, on the other hand, most tokens were made of silver. In 1787, the mayor received 140 silver tokens and each alderman received 70, making a total of 700 annual tokens. Several studies have been made on this series: Fornier, in his study on the tokens of Brittany, listed 100 different tokens. Perthuis and de la Nicollière count 103 in the Golden Book of the Nantes City Hall, Soullard, Tokens of the Mayors of Nantes, finds a total of 135.
