L’Imperial British East Africa Company est une compagnie de commerce fondée en 1888 par l’écossais William Mackinnon. Très occupé par l’administration de l’Afrique du Sud, le gouvernement Britannique permet à cette compagnie d’administrer et développer l’Afrique de l’Est. La compagnie se révèle incapable de construire un chemin de fer entre Mombasa et le lac Victoria et surtout de gérer les tensions entre les différents groupes régionaux. En 1894, le gouvernement britannique forme le Protectorat de l’Afrique de l’Est et la compagnie est dissoute en 1895.
The Imperial British East Africa Company was a trading company founded in 1888 by Scotsman William Mackinnon. Busy with the administration of South Africa, the British government allowed the company to administer and develop East Africa. The company proved incapable of building a railway between Mombasa and Lake Victoria, and especially of managing tensions between the different regional groups. In 1894, the British government formed the East Africa Protectorate, and the company was dissolved in 1895.
