Commentary

Poids léger. Ce type dans la plupart des ouvrages est attribué à Michel II et Théophile. Il faut le restituer à Michel Ier et Théophylactus. C’est la taille du flan et la lettre A sous le M qui permettent cette réattribution.
Lightweight. This type is attributed to Michael II and Theophilus in most works. It must be reassigned to Michael I and Theophylactus. It is the size of the flan and the letter A under the M that allow this reattribution.

Historical background

MICHAEL I and THEOPHYLACT

(25/12/811-11/07/813)

Michael I Rhangbe succeeded Stauracius, his brother-in-law on October 2, 811, wounded with his father Nicephore I on July 25, 811 while fighting against Krum, Tsar of the Bulgarians. Michael I found himself unable to restore a dire situation after the death of his father-in-law, the first emperor to fall to enemies since Valens in 378. He was forced to acknowledge the elevation of Charlemagne in 812. He was finally deposed after another defeat against the Bulgarians.
