Historical background

SANTONS (Region Saintes)

(Second - first century BC)

The Santon were a people who lived in the Celtic north of the estuary of the Gironde. They occupied the territory covering the Saintonge, Aunis and Angoumois. The territory of the civitas is placed on the current departments of Charente, Charente-Maritime and the northern part of the Gironde. Their original name is found in the province and its capital, Saintes. They are mentioned several times by Caesar in the Gallic Wars, in particular about the migration of the Helvetii in 58 BC In fact, the territory of Santon could be the purpose of this transfer of population. In 52 BC, they provided a contingent of twelve thousand men for the army of relief. They had neighbors Pictones the Lemovices and Bituriges Vivisques. Caesar (Bg. I, 10 and 11, III, 11 VII, 75). uses cookies to guarantee a better user experience and to carry out statistics of visits.
