Commentary

Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph von Habsburg-Lothringen (1832-1867) was Imperial Prince and Archduke of Austria, brother of Franz Joseph I of Austria. Following the Mexican Expedition, with the support of Napoleon III and the assurance of popular support, he agreed in 1864 to become Emperor of Mexico under the name of Maximilian I. His power was in fact limited to the areas controlled by the French garrisons. Following the latter's withdrawal in 1867, the imperial troops defending Mexico City were defeated by the troops of the liberals and republicans. Tried and sentenced to death, he was executed on the orders of Benito Juarez on June 19, 1867.

Historical background

MEXICO - MAXIMILIAN I

(1864-1867)

Born in Vienna in 1832, Maximilien is the brother of Emperor François-Joseph, Archduke of Austria. Napoleon III, who wished to get closer to Austria, offered Maximilian the imperial crown of Mexico (July 10, 1863). The majority of Mexicans, attached to Juarez, refuse it and Maximilian can only maintain himself with the support of Napoleon III. Soon abandoned by Napoleon III, he fell into the hands of Juarez, was condemned to death and shot with his generals..
