Commentary

Lothair (born at the end of 941 in Laon, died on March 2, 986 in Laon), was King of the Franks from 954 to 986. Son of Louis IV of Outremer and Gerberge of Saxony, he succeeded his father, and was crowned on November 12, 954 at the Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims by Archbishop Artaud. Following the will of his father, who had associated him with the throne in 952, Lothair excluded from the succession his younger brother Charles, born during the summer of 953. In June 977, the latter was exiled by his brother. Without proof, he is said to have accused his wife Emma of having an adulterous relationship with the Bishop of Laon, Adalberon called Ascelin. Taking refuge at the court of Emperor Otto II of Germany, his cousin, the latter made him Duke of Lower Lotharingia. He reigned under the tutelage of Hugh the Grand Duke of the Franks, but also under that of his uncle, Archbishop Brunon of Cologne. Despite his youth, he was fourteen years old, Lothair wanted to reign alone and establish his authority over his vassals.
