Commentary

Chilpéric I, born between 525 and 527, died between September 20 and 28, 584 in Chelles, is the second king in the series of kings of Soissons of the Merovingian dynasty.
He is the grandson of Clovis, King of the Franks, and the son of Clotaire I, whom he succeeded from 561 to 584, and of Queen Arnegonde.. His reign is known thanks to the Ten Books of History, a hagiography written by Bishop Gregory of Tours, in which the latter recounts the reigns of \\\"good\\\" and \\\"bad\\\" kings.. In these stories, he advocates the superiority of spiritual power (auctoritas) exercised by bishops over temporal power (potestas) exercised by kings.. For this reason, the Bishop of Tours opposed the authority of Chilpéric when he judged the bishops, whose dignity was said to be superior..
On the death of Clotaire I, Chilpéric inherited the smallest part of the kingdom of the Franks, a large part of the Church of which was placed under the authority of Sigebert I, his half-brother, who used his power over the bishops of the suffragan dioceses..
The division of the Frankish kingdom generated fierce competition between the claimants to the kingdom. Chilperic resumes the civil war which had been interrupted during the reunification of the Regnum Francorum by his father, due to the fact that he had not been able to obtain Tours and Poitiers during the division of the kingdom, which his father had held since 511.. The rapprochement of Austrasia with the Aquitanians and the Visigoths also served as a motive for the war.. During almost his entire reign, he tried to increase his domain and fought his half-brothers.. The death of two of them allowed him territorial expansion.

Historical background

METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE

This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395. This series is documented in a small book by Philippe Marinèche from whoever can acquire it, contact phmarineche@aol. com.
