Monnaie de qualité pour ce type, frappée sur une très fine tôle de bronze. Épaisse patine sombre et superficiellement croûteuse dans les champs

Commentary

Les monnaies de cuivre sont rares dans le monnayage mérovingien. Les seules vraiment bien classées sont celles de Marseille, avec un nom de roi. Un exemplaire en bel état et sur un flan large, a été vendu dans MONNAIES 45, n° 986 à 1178€ sur un ordre maximum de 2050€.
L’exemplaire proposé ici est bien complet, faiblement usé et il présente pourtant un poids si léger qu’il est légitime de s’interroger sur sa nature ; il s’agit vraisemblablement d’une divisionnaire du cuivre au chrisme !.
Copper coins are rare in Merovingian coinage. The only truly well-classified ones are those from Marseille, with a king's name. A fine example on a wide flan was sold in MONNAIES 45, no. 986 for €1,178 out of a maximum order of €2,050. The example offered here is very complete, slightly worn, and yet so light that it is legitimate to question its nature; it is likely a copper divisionary with chrism!
