Historical background

MEGARIS - MEGARA

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Megara, located halfway between Athens and Corinth, controlled in the Archaic period the trade routes between the Peloponnese and central Greece and enjoyed great commercial prosperity. The city fell under the control of Athens. It recovered part of its independence after the Battle of Chaeronea. It was declared a free city by Demetrius Poliorcetes in 307 BC but quickly fell back under Macedonian rule. In 243 BC it joined the Achaean league and remained there until its dissolution in 146 BC after the capture and destruction of Corinth.
