Commentary

On the obverse, we have two types of ornamentation on the diadem, a cross or trifoliate clover and two very different types of busts, the first coarse and the second fine. Our example clearly presents a clover linked to a bust in good style from the second group

Historical background

MAURICIUS TIBERIUS

(08/13/582-11/22/602)

Maurice succeeded his father-in-law Tiberius II. After great victories over the Sassanids, he suffered many setbacks in the Balkans and could not prevent the installation of the Slavs and Avars. A military plot overthrew him in 602. He was assassinated while trying to take refuge with Chosroes II.
